Getting the Heat Right: A Better Way to Dry Raisins
We recently put our custom modular IR lamps head-to-head with some of the big international brands. Our goal was pretty straightforward: kill the cold spots. If you’ve worked in food processing, you know the drill. If the heat isn’t even, you get uneven moisture. That’s a nightmare for shelf life and usually means a ruined batch. The problem with the “standard” way Most IR setups have this annoying “edge effect.” Basically, the ends of the heating zone just… drop off. You lose heat right where you need it. We fixed this by going modular. Instead of just lining up lamps, we overlap their radiation patterns. It creates what I like to call a “thermal curtain.” No gaps. No cold spots. Just a steady wall of heat. Plus, we built these for high-density output. When you’re growing a factory, you can’t just keep throwing more lamps at the problem—you have to actually manage the heat. With our modules, you can tweak the wattage for every meter of the belt. So, if your raisins are coming in extra wet one day, you can just beef up the first few zones. You don’t have to rewire the entire line just to handle a humid morning. How we actually stack up When we looked at the data, the difference was in the surface temperature. A lot of the global brands use a one-size-fits-all wavelength. We didn’t do that. We customized the emitter coating to hit the exact point where water in dried fruit absorbs heat. It works. We hit the target core temperature way faster. But a word of caution: because the heat is so concentrated, you have to keep a close eye on your belt speed. If the raisins sit under these lamps too long, you’ll scorch the skins. It’s powerful stuff. Making it work in the real world We designed these to be drop-in replacements. You don’t have to rip out your existing chassis or spend a weekend tearing things apart to scale up. You just add more modules. It keeps downtime low, which keeps the boss happy. We also used heavy-duty connectors. Food-grade environments are brutal—humid, salty, messy. These connectors can take a beating without oxidizing or burning out at the terminals. They just work.
