
Why Your Bathroom Heater Shouldn’t Blind You
Most bathroom heat lamps use short-wave infrared to get you warm the second you flip the switch. It works great, but there’s a catch. Standard halogen bulbs put out a harsh, piercing light that can be way too much for the eyes—especially for babies. We figured out a way to fix that. By tweaking the filament temperature and using special coatings on the quartz, we can change how the light actually behaves.
Fixing the Glare
Here’s the thing: standard lamps dump a massive amount of energy into the visible light spectrum. That’s why you get that blinding white glare that makes you squint. To stop that, we added a selective absorption coating to the glass. Think of it like a filter. It blocks those aggressive blue and UV rays but lets the cozy heat slide right through. You still get the warmth, but the light feels “soft.” It’s not just about making it look nicer, either. It’s about making sure the light isn’t so intense that it strains a newborn’s eyes.
The Trade-off
Now, nothing is perfect. We use a halogen cycle to keep the bulbs from burning out quickly, but adding that filter does cost us a little bit of power. You might lose about 5-10% of the raw heat compared to a clear tube. But we didn’t just leave it at that. We tweaked the wattage and the shape of the reflectors to make sure you still feel that instant heat the moment you step out of the shower.
Getting It Installed Right
When you’re wiring these in, just remember that these things get seriously hot. Make sure your housing is rated for the wattage so the whole unit doesn’t overheat. I’d also suggest using high-temp wiring—nobody wants to deal with melted insulation. And a quick tip: give the unit some breathing room. If you block the airflow or push the power too hard without ventilation, you’ll probably trip the thermal cut-off. Keep the area clear and you’re good to go.
