
Selecting Infrared Heater Wattage Based on Bathroom Square Footage
When you spec out infrared heating lamps for bathrooms, you aren’t heating the air; you are heating the surfaces and the person. This means the wattage must match the room’s volume and the target temperature lift. Using a 1200W lamp in a small powder room is a waste of energy and can lead to overheating.
Matching Power to Footprint
For small bathrooms under 5 square meters, a single 400W to 600W shortwave infrared lamp is usually enough. These units provide immediate heat. In mid-sized bathrooms (5-10 sqm), we recommend 800W to 1000W. If you are dealing with large master baths or open-concept wet rooms over 10 square meters, you need multiple 1200W units spaced evenly to avoid cold spots.
Technical Trade-offs of High Wattage
Higher wattage means faster heat-up times. It also means higher current draw. If you wire up several 1200W lamps on a single circuit, you risk tripping the breaker or overheating the wiring if the gauge isn’t sized correctly. We always suggest checking the total load against the circuit capacity before installation.
Waterproofing and Placement
Bathroom environments are harsh. Moisture ingress will burn out a lamp quickly. Ensure your fixtures are IP-rated for the specific zone. Lamps placed directly over a shower need higher ingress protection than those near a vanity.
Energy Maximization
To get the most out of your energy spend, use a timer or a motion sensor. Infrared lamps hit peak temperature in seconds. Leaving them on for 30 minutes when the user is only there for 10 is inefficient. Pair the wattage to the room size, keep the IP rating high, and use a controller to kill the power when the room is empty.
